Indonesian President urges prayers for plane crash victims

Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Sunday urged the people to pray for Sriwijaya plane crash victims which was crashed into the sea a day before with 62 passengers onboard.

The Boeing 737-500 was headed to Pontianak in West Kalimantan before it disappeared on Saturday from radar screens four minutes after the takeoff.

The Sriwijaya Air plane, flight SJ182 was 30 minutes behind schedule due to heavy rain. All 62 onboard were Indonesians.

Search and rescue team scoured the waters near the crash site as human body parts and suspected pieces of the plane were retrieved.

Official also said they may had detected signals that could come from a flight recorder of the flight.

Meanwhile, the families of victims arrived at the temporary post mortem facility at Supadio airport, Pontianak to give samples for the DNA.

The crash is the first major airline incident in Indonesia since the crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max in 2018 that killed all 189 passengers along with crew members. That plane also crashed into the Java Sea soon after takeoff from Soekarno-Hatta airport.
