NAB 'kidnapped' Khawaja Asif alleges Maryam
ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday arrested former foreign minister and senior leader of the opposition’s PML-N Khawaja Muhammad Asif.
NAB Spokesperson Nawazish Ali confirmed the arrest of Khawaja Asif in assets beyond known sources of income case.
The spokesperson said that the PML-N leader had earlier been summoned for an inquiry but he continuously failed to ‘cooperate’ with the bureau.
Ali said that Khawaja Asif would be presented before an accountability court on Wednesday to obtain his remand.
Meanwhile, PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif has condemned the arrest of Khawaja Asif.
“The arrest of Khawaja Asif is the result of nexus between the selectors and the selected,” Nawaz tweeted.
His daughter and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz denounced the arrest, saying he had been ‘kidnapped by NAB’.
Maryam alleged that "someone" had called Asif and asked him to stop supporting Nawaz Sharif's narrative. When he refused, Asif was told to "be prepared for the consequences".
During the last two years of the PTI government, the NAB had arrested several senior leaders of the opposition PPP and the PML-N including Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Khursheed Shah, Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz.
Political analysts believe that the sitting government is using such tactics against the senior leadership of the opposition parties to stop criticism regarding its performance.
